An interesting TED talk.
Hai Richard, do u think there’s a easier and cheaper way for people in China and Indian villages to recycle plastic in a save way?
From watching that TED talk it looks like they could really benefit from a cheap and simple hand held infra-red plastic detector. Something about the size of a drink bottle which they can press against an unknown plastic and it then indicates the plastic type.
From my very limited knowledge on the topic I think something similar is used in automated plastic sorting facilities where by they expose a plastic to an infra-red light source and then use an IR camera and a computer to analyse the cool down rate of the plastic, which is slightly different for each plastic type, as a bottle passes below. A jet of air then directs each container into a select bin.
