Going electric – The RC eTrike Project

Recently I have been perusing the forums over at endless-sphere.com looking for ideas on how to turn my friends recumbent trike electric. The owner of the trike wants it for his daily commute to work and as such has given me everything short of a blank check for this project.

The trike to be used is the same trike that now has the Recumbent Light setup. From what I know so far a few changes will need to be made to the existing trike such as replacing the drum breaks with disc’s, installing a pair of hard case saddle bags over the back wheel and replacing the tiers with something that has more profile to name a few.

In addition to this of course is the components to make it electric, with the key four being the:

  • electric motor
  • reduction gears for the electric motor
  • lithium batteries
  • controller

The variation of these four key components is seemingly endless. As such, the build its self may be fairly straight forward with the majority of the work going into sourcing the right parts before hand.
